The Journey of Innovation & Entrepreneurship Continues...

The 25 participants from 17 countries, attending the 2018 Innovation & Training in Israel had an opportunity to take on a special spiritual journey of the Holy Land in lower part of Galilee with Ms. Yudith Rosenthal Yamburg, the Director of METC. The sites visited include the Jordan River, City of Capernaum, Tiberias and Mount of Beatitudes. We got to learn about archeological sites and events related to various religious activities— some of the participants decided to renew their faith by entering the Jordan River, while others supported them as a sign of solidarity.

Each participant had a moment of meditation, and had special connection with nature...and concluded with a unique local meal from the “Kibbutz”, the local community.


21st Century Pedagogy by Prof Yoram Harpaz

After a day of being tourists, we had a morning session with Professor Yoram Harpaz, on Friday 29th November who challenged us to think strategically and systematically about education. He introduced the concept of the Premises of the Pedagogy of the 21st Century, which is also part of his book titled “Teaching and Learning in a Community of Thinking”. He introduced 6 steps on how to design an educational environment: Choosing a pedagogical meta-narratives, creating our distinctive pedagogical narrative, Defining the desired graduate, Means of education, Quality control and Implementation control.

His emphasis was on the first step: Choosing a pedagogical meta-narrative; where he went deeper into the concepts of three different aims of education being socialization, acculturation and individuation. He challenged us to take a moment, and reflect on where our countries are today and also which of the three aims is relevant to our education system. Each participant had to personally make one choice of the three narrative relevant in developing the 21st century education system. This we must say was one of the most difficult choices we had to make as participants. Each approach has its own way to develop and support the education process, focusing on society, culture and personal development. He advised us as educators that we can only choose one pedagogy for effective results in education, and the decision must respond to our pedagogical sentiment. One other key taking from his lecture was that educators must continue to create distinctive pedagogical narrative and design a plan to start implementation. Professor Harpaz ended his lecture by elaborating on various means of education which includes the curriculum, the pattern of teaching, the method of assessment, the organizational structure, the educational climate and the physical conditions.


The Future classroom—BETA Sefer


On Sunday, 02nd December after a day of “rest”, we visited a teacher training Centre in the city of Petah Tikva—a futuristic classroom lab which was established in 2015. The Center is an innovative model of a class of the future (BETA Sefer); and Karina Batat started the session innovatively by inviting us to Dance.

She explained that the aim of the Beta School is to develop an environment that supports creativity, innovation and collaboration between teachers and students in order to redefine education. It offers a classroom with multiple spaces to work with others and to interact with technology without losing the focus on the learning process. Three takings from the session was that their techno-pedagogical approach is based on three key words: “Inspire,, Empower, Create”. As participants we were invited to design a 2030 educational model of the Future Classroom using LEGO to build a prototype.
The exercise was one that inspired us to be creative and innovative, and the outcomes were great with each team presenting a different model. The principles of this session were Self-Learning, Project and Problem based learning, Hybrid mod-el learning, Team work and collaborative learning.


Afternoon of thinking, creating and developing solutions “ S o l v e a t h o n ”

The afternoon after the trip to Petach Tikva, we had a session with Ariel Cegla of Mashav; which inspired us to start thinking outside the box. Ariel began the Solveathon session with three exercises that required alternative thinking. The aim of the session was for us to start defining the projects we are to develop as the expectation from each participant to take back to their countries. The projects Ariel explained, are to be contextual/ relevant to us, innovative and inspired by the les-sons from the Israel Training; and should also be “SMART”, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time Bound. Each participant had to choose which area they will be focusing on Innovation, Learning models, Entrepreneurship models, Policy and decision making, and 21st Century skills. The challenge as we begin the last week of the training is to work collaboratively in teams to develop real projects that will make an impact in our country’s education systems…
