ICT4E, TechEd & Science???? Should they be in our curriculum?

Next week we begin a new training course on the subject of Science, Technology and ICT in Education and I would like to start with a very clear statement:

“This are not objectives by themselves but means to provide our pupils with skills and capabilities for the rest of their life”

We should agree on the fact that these are huge and complex clusters that have extension in almost every aspect of our professional and private life for every individual in the world. As part of our reality, we as Educator should think how this subject are present in our institutions.

The real question is not IF this are useful in Education but HOW they can be useful in education since they are part of everyone’s life.

In order to answer the HOW, we should contemplate three things:

1)      Doing, experimenting and not just theorize.

Education today demands form every Educator to leave the frontal and theoretic lecture and enter the real world, an empirical world in which our students must be connected. As ones, the Director of the Science Department in the Ministry of Education in Israel told me:

“We don’t teach science, we do science” and that is a way of thinking, a pedagogical approach that is critic in order to provide our students with a meaningful learning experience.

2)      Interdisciplinarity.

The fact that we created a compartmentalized educational curriculum for the sake of specialization, in some cases, or to make more organize education does not mean it is correct. As stated before reality is more complex and the subject we try continuously to divide and insert in compartments are not divided in real world.

Taking the principle of interdisciplinarity in order to provide rich and interesting learning spaces is fundamental. Examples of this are Education for Sustainable Development of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

3)      Contextual and relevant.

This is critic to overcome the most important challenge in this area: the lack of student interest in these fields. I believe that the cause for it, it is the fact that this fields are not teach in an empirical and interdisciplinary way what generates lack of relevance. The student only see abstract information and not the secrets and “instructions books” of the world surrounding them. By the way that is the way we should present these fields.

As always I hope the training course will open some new windows and share with our participants some approaches and paths that will be relevant to deal with their reality in their countries and INSPIRE THEM.
