“ON” Primary school and “Beit Issie Shapiro” NGO for people with disabilities Ra’anana

On Monday the 21st November 2016, the Special and Inclusive Education course participants travelled to Tel Aviv where they visited two professional centers namely, “ON” Primary school and “Beit Issie Shapiro” NGO for people with disabilities Ra’anana.  We experienced a lot of learning from the presentations, interactions and observations that we made for the period we were in the two centers. Below are some of the best practices we learnt from the two centers.


ON primary school


This is a school for children aged 6 to 21 years old with cerebral palsy, brain damage and multiple disorders and other physical disabilities. The school had an enrollment of 140  children and 140 staff who include teachers, paramedic staff and social workers.


Good practices experiences learn from ON primary school.

1.      We were impressed by the variety of the teaching and learning resources in the school, most of them adapted to suit the learner’s needs;

2.      Teaching was team. Teachers set the goals they want to achieve with parents and pupils then they build the IEP according to their wishes. The main goals could be academic, social, emotional or physical and preference was given to what the child herself/himself required. They gave us an example of a child who when asked what she needed she said her main goal was to have friends. So the school mad that to be her main goal for the year and created a social environment that helped her to make friends.

3.      The children despite having severe disabilities were independent. Children were given the opportunities to do by themselves and if they needed help they asked the teachers or friends or any other staff.

4.      The school used the regular curriculum but they varied it to make it accessible to each child’s learning needs with different learning materials. The children chose the out of class activities of their own interest, such as cookery, computer studies, music, and advertisement among many others.

5.      The school had a mult media room with variety of computer ICT equipment and soft ware that suited the learners’ interests and a lot of support was given to those who showed special interest in certain areas. For example there was a child with intellectual challenges who had special interest in Djay. The school went away of the way and bought a very expensive machine and computer soft ware for mixing music just to motivate him. The boy was highly motivated and was now training the teachers and other students in computerized Djay.

6.      The school offered a variety state of the art assistive devises each fitted to the child requirements. The assistive were replaced every two years or according to the changes the child was undergoing.

7.      There was an occupational kitchen where the children learnt cooking. Every Wednesday they baked and sols bread and cakes to staff and other interested people.

8.      Very good rehabilitation facilities, hydrotherapy pool, Jacuzzi, physiotherapy room

9.      The school was a day school and gave opportunity to learner to interact with the community with the whole objective of  making the students strong, confident and interactive individuals in the community

In this school every day is a different day and different experiences. To me, this school feels like it is part of my family, every time I go away at the end of the day, I look forward to coming back the next day



“BEIT ISSIE SHAPIRO” NGO FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES RA’ANANA


“BEIT ISSIE SHAPIRO was started in the 1980s in a rented house with 16 children with disabilities. The vision of the centre was “Every person with Disability will be a citizen with equal rights” that person should be an active member and not just a member of the community. The Centre had a total of 120 children with learning and motor disabilities. Children are placed in classes according to their age and not disabilities.
They offered a variety of services which they called organizational strategy for social change, and include the following:


1.       The Early intervention which was offered in three different centers depending on the age of the learner

2.       “TOGETHER” adapted mult cultural services for the community which involved a variety af medical, and Para medic services offered in a family therapy centre.

3.       Advocacy for change in policy

4.       The mult sensory centre known as the snoozelen where we all enjoyed interacting with the facilities and took photographs in the centre

5.       Technology consulting centre which included a special dental clinic for persons with disabilities

6.       We shown different applications and IT equipment that makes the life for children with disability easier and sometimes the only way to communicate, play and express their thoughts. For example they had a soft ware known as  start up sesame enable which helps individuals with limitations in hand use  to have full access to their smart phones, ipads etc.

7.       Other Assistive technology included powere mobility wheel chair.

8.       Play and leisure. They had helped the municipality to construct the “Friendship park”. With a variety recreation activities for all persons with all types of disabilities. They involved the community, parents and persons with disabilities to design the park which had a variety of play and recreation facilities that could be used by both disabled and non disabled persons.
9.      It is a unique centre that all inclusive and provided a variety of services for persons with and without disabilities in the same set ups, within Israel and other countries. They had 150 therapy centers, 20 dental clinics and snoozelen rooms in various parts of Israel.


The “friendship Park: an initiative of Shapiro in collaboration with the Municipal council, parents and persons with disability as a social inclusion initiative.

 

CONCLUSION

In general the two centers visited on Monday were very well selected as they presented good models of   of specialized services in inclusive set up. There were a variety of theories as well as practical experiences to learn from not forget the memorable interactions we had with the members of those respective centers.
